Upcoming Workshop in Great Falls
“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” -Pablo Picasso
Dear LRA Artists:
Greetings and hope your summer was enjoyable and inspiring. LRA continues to provide opportunities for its members with five group shows and 48 solo exhibits so far in 2017 with more to come. Significantly, our Art in Public Places (AIPP) program needs a new coordinator so if you are willing to volunteer for this position let anyone on the LRA Board know, otherwise the program may be trimmed. We have tabled the prospect of an LRA gallery for the moment and are pursuing the urgently needed update and upgrade of our LeagueofRestonArtist.org website. We will be having our Barnes and Noble Bookfair Fundraiser on November 4th from 1-5pm at the Fair Oaks location so please postpone any prospective bookbuying or giving until that date and let me know if you are willing to help out at the event. We are also working with our Corporate Partner, Northwest Federal Credit Union, to schedule an art show early in December. The Reston Photographic Society (RPS) has already scheduled a series of sessions with Master photographers from the DC area as a continuation of their speaker series so don’t miss it. As always please don’t hesitate to contact me at president.LRA@gmail.com with any suggestions or concerns. Find time to make art because as Picasso said, “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”! Best wishes for this autumn.
Rudy Guernica
LRA President

Back in the later half of 2015, we worked with the Council for the Arts for Herndon to transition the Art in Public Places Program (AIPP) from their organization to LRA. Our own founding member Pat MacIntyre created and managed this outreach program for many, many years. This program provides a large number of buildings in northern Virginia as exhibition space for solo shows and possible small group shows. The program generates favorable publicity for LRA, some sales, and many potential connections for our members. For over the last two years, we have provided approximately 130 opportunities for solo shows of LRA’s members work at locations ranging from the Herndon Community Center to the Fairfax Governmental Offices in Reston.
For 2018 we may be making some changes to this AIPP. We really need some additional volunteers to manage and coordinate program to keep it successful. If you are interested in getting more involved with this LRA program, please contact LRA President, Rudy Guernica at president.lra@gmail.com
Jim Schlett -AIPP Coordinator
LRA will be out to promote art in our community, and to raise money for the Scholarship Program.
Also this year we are thankful to Barnes & Noble in Fairfax to host this event, in the last two years we raised more that $4,000.00 fully utilized for scholarship.
We hope you can be part of our amazing volunteers team, and join us on Saturday November 4th at Barnes & Noble in Faifax – we will be there from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, you can choose your time frame and in which sections volunteer.
Please contact Rudy Guernica, LRA President, at president.lra@gmail.com if you would like to help.
December PopUp Show at North Federal Union – Stay tuned more info coming up!
Nature Visions: I hope you are all aware of the upcoming Photo Expo, Nature Visions on the first weekend in November. If you are not a photographer, but you enjoy beautiful photos, you are welcome to sign up to visit the show also. I believe you do need to register in advance. (It is free to attend.) If you have any questions, please contact our Nature Visions Rep, Ellis Rosenberg (EllisRosenberg2@gmail.com).
Photographers: Just a quick reminder to let you know that the deadline for uploading your images for the 2017 Nature Visions Photo Expo is rapidly approaching.
You have until September 15—this coming Friday—to upload images and also have a chance to resubmit if any of your images are rejected in the pre-judging review (all images are reviewed by a panel prior to judging to ensure that all rules and regulations are being followed.)
The final deadline is Friday, September 22. If you submit images during this last week and they are rejected, you WILL NOT have an opportunity to resubmit—so don’t leave it until the last moment!
PHOTOWORKS NEXT BIG PROJECT:
We have gathered together a group of Master Photographers to meet on a monthly basis with fellow artists and photographers, and engage in a photo portfolio critique — offering individualized insight into the art and craft and goals of photography. We are hoping you can join us.
WANT TO JOIN US? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The series of 6 monthly meet-ups runs from 6:30-8:30PM — Sunday, September 17, 2017 through Sunday, February 18, 2018 — and each session features a different Master Photographer from the Washington Metro Area. The first session (meeting this coming Sunday, 9/17 at 6:30PM) features Min Enghauser, an award-winning photographer based in Alexandria. Min has a piercing eye for color and detail, offering intimate and powerful portraits of both the natural and man-made. The fee for the entire series of 6 gatherings is $100, and includes a personal 25-30 minute portfolio review with the Master Photographer of your choice. You can sign up for the workshop series, and choose the photographer you’d like to review your work at the following link on Glen Echo Park’s website:

Congratulation to Jim Schlett
Jim was one of 6 artists selected out of nearly 100 applications to participate in Alexandria’s Community Support Arts program. His project, the “Alexandria, Moments in Time” captured and connected with the spirit of this vibrant port city. Over several weeks he roamed the streets and byways of the historic area and the waterfront. Throughout the project, numerous residents and visitors in Alexandria chatted about the project and my photography. The final 50 prints in this project were selected by Alexandria’s Community Support Art staff. A great deal of publicity was generated about this project and a reception was held in the Old Town Alexandria waterfront area.
The Art with Heart
Alessandra Ricci exhibition in Lake Anne at Joanne Rose Gallery, during the month of August: Touching and Innovative.
This title describes the concept of art expressed through canvas. Every painting is imbued with the artist’s energy, thoughts, and emotions that are projected to the observer using various colors and mediums. My double-canvas paintings facilitate and bridge the connection between the artist’s mental concept and the art itself… an experience that transfers from the mind, to the canvas, and freely flows through your heart. – Alessandra Ricci
Congratulation to Ruth Sievers
Ruth portrait “Ed” has been selected by curator Judith Peck to be included in the 9th Annual Expressions Portrait Competition Exhibit at ArtSpace Herndon, which runs Oct. 3 to Oct. 28. Everyone is invited to attend the Awards Reception on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 7 – 9 pm.
