posted Mar 7, 2010 5:43 PM by League of Reston Artists Webmaster

Dear Member: For our meeting program on March 15th, 2010 7:30 -9:30 at RCC Lake Anne, we are honored to have professional photographer James Roy giving a presentation titled "The Art of Creating Fine Art Photos". James's impressive bio follows.

Biography

“There are artists who transform the sun into a yellow spot, and there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow dot into the sun” (Picasso).  Photographer James Roy is such an artist.  His work provides viewers with glimpses of new meaning into everyday experiences and makes the ordinary extraordinary.

Photography Experience / Awards

James’ photographic work reflects over 25 years of professional and personal experience. His formal training is recognized through membership in the Maryland Professional Photographer’s Association (MDPPA), Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and American Society of Photographers (ASP).  He has received numerous MDPPA Best-In-Show prints, PPA loan collection prints and Fuji Masterpiece and Kodak Gallery Awards.  He holds the following internationally recognized PPA degrees: Masters, Craftsman.  He also holds the prestigious title of PPA International Photographer of the Year in 2008.  His wedding images have been published and featured on the covers of various regional wedding journals and in PPA’s “Professional Photographer” magazine.  His fine art images are part of many private and public collections in the United States and Europe.

Studio / Teaching

James’ studio in Laurel, Maryland caters to the wedding, portrait and fine art markets.  He has carved out a niche in the local and US destination-wedding markets as one of only a handful of true, fine art wedding photographic artists. James is a natural teacher, and has been sought after for the past 25 years as an instructor and personal mentor.  He is known for his simple and effective style of teaching.  He is especially effective at explaining complex concepts such as the art of previsualizing a composition, or finding and using natural light.  His workshop series (www.photosafariworkshop.com) is designed to teach his students the skills required to consistently create powerful, artistic images.

Formal Education / Exhibits

James is educated with a Masters degree in International Business, and a bachelor’s degree in business and finance.  After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1986, he served three years as a bilingual US Army NATO Liaison officer in northeastern Italy.  During this period, he began the first of a series of photographic fine art portfolios.  This body of work is entitled, “The Carnival of Venice, Italy”.  Over the past 25 years, he has had numerous solo fine art photo exhibits, including a 4-year exhibit in Venice, Italy.  He continues to make annual pilgrimages to Italy, the Caribbean, and the American west.  He has a rare talent of creating photographic art from diverse subject matter, and he has amassed numerous world class, eclectic fine art bodies of work including:

      -     “The Carnival of Venice, Italy”

-          “Staircases of the World”

-          “Landscapes of the American Southwest”

-          “ Reflections Around Us”

-          “Caribbeanscapes”

-           “Weddings as Fine Art”

-          “Cityscapes & Architecture of Italy”

-          “The Beauty of Butterflies”

“The Art of Creating Fine Art Photos”

Course Description

How can one consistently create powerful photographic images from all types of subject matter?  Does it require raw talent or can it be learned?  James has a unique talent, but he also believes that this creative process is also learned and ultimately can be taught.  In this course, he will dissect photographs from each of his fine art portfolios, and explain the process he uses to create powerful images from diverse subject matter.
