In spite of a cold and somewhat snowy winter, 2014 is starting off on the right foot for LRA.  We have already had 2 successful group exhibitions at the Reston Chamber of Commerce and the Parkridge 5 building, as well as four solo shows at the Reston Center I & II buildings.   We have also awarded over $3,000 in scholarships to high school seniors in Fairfax County, thanks to the efforts of Cheryl Parsons.   Other recent highlights are mentioned elsewhere in this issue.
We are looking forward to a great exhibition in April at the JoAnne Rose Gallery for the Founders' Day activities, as Reston celebrates its 50th year.  Addtionally, for the first time, we are also looking into organizing an "Art Night" event at  Parkridge 5 in May or June.   For that event, we will be sending out invites to "ArtNight" to members of the Reston Chamber of Commerce, which has over 700 members.
With all of our activities, I would like to encourage each of you to take advantage of the many group exhibitions that we hold over the course of the year and enter your work.  The quality of the work our members create is outstanding!    These exhibitions provide public access to your paintings and photographs and has the potential for more exposure of your work.
One last item, share the advantages of LRA and get a like-minded friend to join the LRA for 2014.

Finding Your Artistic Voice

Lynn Goldstein

Lynn Goldstein.
The League of Reston Artists is proud to continue its speakers program with Lynn Goldstein’s presentation “Finding Your Artistic Voice”, Tuesday, March 25th, at 6:30 pm, at the Reston Community Center at Lake Anne (1609 Washington Plaza).  The presentation will start at 7:00 pm and last about an hour

After we have worked out the technical intricacies of making our art, we are faced with the challenge of finding our voice. After all, we are communicating as artists. This presentation will provide a guide to finding your voice. Lynn will give examples of how she worked to find the direction that she is currently taking in her artwork. Lynn will discuss her history to help illustrate how so many areas of her life and past inform her art today. She will cover composition, format, subject choices and more. After this presentation, participants will be encouraged to delve into their artistic choices to better understand their work and to help develop a consistent artistic voice.

Exhibit Committee

The event is free and is open to members and non-members, no reservations are required.

Meet the Member: Elizabeth Linares.
"Divine Love," a solo exhibition of work celebrating the beauty and manifestation of God's love all around us.

As an artist, I strive to capture God’s divine love and light through my photographs.
In life, we as humans are subject to the frailties of life. We are born, we live, we love, and yes, we leave this place when we die.  During our lifetime, we experience the turbulence of life with its ups and downs, sometimes overwhelming grief and, at other times, overwhelming joy.  The ups and downs are part of the journey, part of our human experience. We come to know God's love in these moments and in the little things we see each day.
At a young age, I discovered a unique ability to capture light and life in a single moment, freezing it in time. I am ever awestruck by the beauty in all I see -- in nature, in people, in His creations. It brings me great joy to capture these moments and forever preserve them so that others can see the world as I see it and experience His divine love.
Thank you for reading this. May we all witness and experience “Divine Love."

About Me
I am the first-born daughter of Puerto Rican parents. Born and raised in New York, I was hit hard by the September 11th attacks on our nation. An avid photographer since childhood, it was this moment that caused me to reevaluate my life and focus on my art.
I believe in divine love and I paint with light; therefore, I am a lightworker.

LRA Solo Exhibitions:
Karen Hutchison and Jim Schlett

Karen Hutchison
Acrylic Mixed Media Paintings and Archival Prints Exhibit at Reston Center II
Main Floor Lobby
12005 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston

As a local abstract artist living in the Northern Virginia area, I experienced many contemporary influences that lead me to enjoy art and design. I prefer acrylic paints and the creativity it brings with the combinations of color. Many of my art pieces are mixed media using a variety of pastes, papers and collected items. In abstract art I feel you have the freedom to create your own design. Your creativity can be within yourself, from a personal experience, thought or idea.
I also enjoy customizing art for an individual’s personal space and different aspects of interior design.
Karen Hutchison is an award winning mixed media artist, and was honored by having one of her art pieces selected for a book cover. Along with the Loudoun Arts Council-Arts In The Village Gallery, she is a board member of the League of RestonArtists, Lorton Arts Foundation-Workhouse Arts Center-Gallery W-9, Herndon Arts Council, Ocean City Art  League, and Rehoboth Art League.
