The
Artist:
It gives me joy to create art that is enjoyed by others and at
the same time lets me continue to grow and expand and evolve. I
want my paintings to express that joy I have with the act of putting
paint from brush to canvas. I strive to show this through my use
of line and color. I am currently focusing on my love of flowers
and plants and their beauty, rhythm, and colors.
I am inspired by the colors of Matisse and Gauguin, the linear
flow of Van Gogh, and the brilliance of Cezanne.
My encouragement goes back in time to my high school art teacher,
Ray Wilkins. With his help, I applied for and received a semester
scholarship at the Corcoran School of Art in 1973 where my painting
instructor was Gene Davis. As all of the students around me were
pouring paint on raw canvas on the floor, I was creating landscapes
and figure paintings.
I continued my creative growth while working full time and raising
my family by remaining as active as possible. I attended painting
classes at a local studio, participated in outdoor art fairs in
Herndon and Fairfax, continued and finished my art education at
college, and for six years organized, hung, and participated in
an art exhibition at the Fairfax County Government Center. I am
currently being guided and inspired by John Blee's Independent
Painting class at the Art League in Alexandria. Since retiring,
I have been able to finally devote the time to my art that I have
always dreamed of.
There has never been a time that I have not thought of myself
as an artist. |
